Nathan Kirshenbaum, Community Relations Coordinator, Senior Helpers San Gabriel Valley presented the program.

Nathan pointed out a significant demographic reality as the Baby Boom generation moves into their senior years. We will see a 100% increase in “Seniors” and the need for proper planning will be so important. Life expectancy is going up, nearing 80 and care issues loom large, that combined with dementia, in many cases renders seniors unable to care for themselves.

According to AARP, 90% of Americans want to age in there own home! But many also need assistance with food, physical care and proper medicine.  Will there be enough care givers?

The keys to being prepared:

  1. Develop a Care Plan, which may include long-term care insurance
  2. Know the facts about aging
  3. Maintain a healthy lifestyle (food & exercise)
  4. Stay connected with friends, neighbors, church…

Questions from Rotarians. What is the difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s?  Nathan explained that Dementia is a broad category for brain deterioration, while Alzheimer’s is a specific type of condition.

What causes dementia? Loss of blood flow to areas of the brain cause loss of functionality. It is like a mini stroke, a small blockage that then grows, damaging parts of the brain, ultimately leading to loss of function, mentally and physically. The risk factors are the same as heart attack and stroke.

How do we avoid stress? Close your eyes, take a deep breath, relax and meditate.  Don’t create ridiculous schedules that leave no time for relaxation, communication and vacations.
