Club Assembly

Our new board members took the podium to discuss each one of their ideas for the 2011-2012 Rotary year Avenues of Service.  The first to present was Mimi Hennessey, director representing Club Service.  Club Service involves all club communication such as the High Gear Newsletter, surveys, Arcadia Rotary website, updating our club roster, etc.  Club Service encompasses our special events as well as our meetings.  Mimi is recruiting help and adopted the motto, “we want you, and we want you now!”.

Ralph Orr is director of Vocational Service and gave an overview of his committee’s responsibilities to include Teacher Mini Grants.  This is a fun committee (I know because I have served on it years ago) where Rotary sends out applications to area teachers for small grants to be used for equipment or supplies in the classroom.  Teachers submit their written programs detailing the benefits they will bring to the kids they teach if awarded a small grant.  Rotarians judge the applications and checks are awarded to several teachers with the brightest ideas.   The Dan Stover Music Contest is always fun to watch as high school seniors perform with musical instruments locally for cash prizes.  The winner moves on to regional and district contests for prize money as high as $5000.  The four-way speech contest is always exciting because each contestant has to incorporate all four ways of our Rotary Four Way Test within their speech. Winners go on to group, regional and district levels.  The George Hensel Ethics Essay Contest has two levels both club and district.

Mary Salcedo, director of Community Service will be responsible for Salute to Seniors’, Relay for Life and a new Holiday Luncheon offsite, which will involve seniors.  She needs ideas and help from all of us.

Rosie Mares has agreed to be director of Environmental Service.  She will stage the Arbor Day luncheon at the Arboretum and a brush-cleaning project (possibly using goats to clear hillside brush).  She will endorse a “Recycle, Reuse, Regenerate” program.

Steve Peletier is the International director, will continue with Rotary Amigos, the group study exchange program, and wants your ideas for more.

Geoff Tookey is director of our New Generations Service.  This program will still focus on youth activities such as support of Lucky Baldwin Troup 103, Students of The Month, RYLA, and of course the Rotary Interact Club at AHS, which is self governing and self supporting.  New Generations will stress ethics, service and fellowship.

Mike Ojeda is our Membership director.  This is the life’s blood of Rotary and Mimi stressed that we need to search for all types of members who care about fellowship, service and Rotary.  Mike’s motto will be “Each One-Reach One!”
