Arcadia Rotarians and their guests experienced another fun filled afternoon of thorough bred racing at world famous Santa Anita Race Track on February 1, 2013. Everybody arrived early to find a table and order lunch before the first post time. We were supplied with George Fasching’s expert touting of horses and for the most part they were helpful. The Frontrunner restaurant welcomed the Rotarians along with many other groups, who helped to fill the room to capacity.
It was a spectacularly clear day as the races started, with the view of mountains and infield unsurpassed. Coming out of the gate in the first race was a horse of dubious Italian distinction, Miceli. For those who could tell a winner, Miceli paid $10.20 to win.
A “hot” tip came from our own John Wilson, who heard it right from the horse’s mouth, actually the jockey, that J. Talamo would be riding all winners today. Unfortunately, that tip proved to be only partially right. Talamo did ride Macho Dorado to victory in the 6th race, whereupon Macho Dorado was immediately claimed for $25,000.00. Better luck next time with Talamo aboard.
A big favorite with the crowd was Patriot’s Voyage in the 3rd race, which did not disappoint paying $3.40 to win.
One disappoint was Pussycat Lips in the 7th race, which finished 4th.
Those who stayed around for the 8th race were awarded by picking Raisin’ Cain, a 101/5 point underdog which paid $23.00 for those who liked biblical references.
Spotted giving racing tips to his young son was Gerard Tamparong. Way to start them off young Gerard! The Miller Chiropractic Group was in full attendance, learning from the old master himself, Brad Miller.
All in all it was a good day and a lot of fun.
Thank you to Don Milefchik for organizing the event and overseeing the betting.
