Our New Zealand project got serious this week with more deliveries and installations:

  • back and front doors were added
  • a rear bench was installed across the back wall
  • a local craftsman, Richard Tamahoe built a special workbench (see pictures) designed for Maori carving.  The bench is on wheels.
  • $NZ13,000 of tools and equipment were delivered including the carving handsets and carving stools.
Project Committee and Past President of Kerikeri Club explained that the next major step will be to install the lighting and electrical outlets and take delivery of a shipping container to store valuable materials.   The residents of the Marae were observed to be quite excited that the project is finally coming to completion.
When complete a class of eight students at a time can be instructed in the Carving artforms.  The project has generated excitement in the Maori community and stimulated a broader vision for cultural tourism in the area.
