Friday March 30, 2012 was RYLA day at Arcadia Rotary. As is the custom, RYLA students participate in the meeting and preside over the festivities, leading us in song, the pledge of allegiance, and the invocation. They ask for guests of Rotarians, call for announcements and fine members. Lastly, they discuss their activities at RYLA camp and what they learned.
Andrew Sun was Rotary president for the day, and fined Terry Earll for a crashed helicopter; Gerard Tamparong for a new set of wheels; Roger Grant for his new granddaughter, Mike Real for Casino night; Frank Hall for looking like a card shark; Brad Miller for not having a name for his new dog and Brian Cogbill.
Andrew Sun, attended the Culture Walk part of the conference, and experienced an emotional aspect when discussing a family member who is terminal.
Alyson Watkins was on the Trust Fall program and experienced many discussions with the attendees.
Connor Lee was on the Food panel and thoroughly enjoyed the food prepared for the attendees.
Alex Berger attended the Plenary Session. There were two speakers at his panel: Jerry Burns, who is a paraplegic and Kathy Turner who has born deaf. Both of these persons spoke about perseverance and not letting a disability stop one for meeting life’s challenges.
Anum Ahmad spoke about the first day and the Icebreakers. At the first sessions, they got to meet everybody and bond with fellow students.
Ashley Chi attended the Rock Climbing panel and described her efforts to climb a rock which she had never done before. The benefits of this exercise were to learn to communicate better with others.
Christine Jun participated in literary dropping an egg. Various ideas were exchanged on ways to deal with dropping an egg from a platform.
Isaac Chan was at the Lego Lab. The participants were asked to build something, which is this instance was a spaceship. Working on this project taught cooperation.
Trent Mathison was on the ethics panel. This panel had to decide how to deal with an issue of what is the right thing to do.
Calvin Huang talked about the Rabbit challenge. There they had to decorate a poster. There were sides and they differed on what to do. The sides learned to compromise and he learned a little about himself.
Andrew concluded by saying the group met interesting people and made new friends. It was one of the most memorable occasions in his life, because he got to work with people of differing viewpoints and different personalities.
