1. Mike Real is looking for one more family to host a Rotary Exchange Student for a period of time. He has two families signed up and needs another. If you can help, please contact Mike.

2. John Wilson made us aware that this was Steve Pelletier’s last meeting with the club. On behalf of the club he thanked Steve for all that he has done and wished him well in his new home in Dana Point.

3. The Teacher of the Year was introduced by School Superintendent David Vannasdall. She is Sandy Macintosh, ELD (English Language Development) teacher at the Hugo Reid School. Sandy is a veteran of 14 years of teaching with eleven of those years in the Arcadia School District. She has received numerous awards and grants, including “World Class School” Award (top 10% in the country), Profiles in Excellence in 2007-8, and recipient of grants for 10 years from Rotary, AEF, and Assistance League. Sandy, at 16, was a Rotary Exchange Student to Japan for one year, an amazing experience for her. She and her husband have lived in Arcadia for 14 years, and have two boys, 18 and 20, who are attending college in Canada.

4. The Students of the Month were introduced by Mike Real.

  • Melanie Chen was our Athletics student. She currently has a 3.8 GPA at Arcadia High. Melanie has been on the Varsity Girls Basketball team for four years, and has been the captain for the last two. She is also a member of the Interact Club and Key Club. Hobbies include skiing, scuba diving, traveling abroad, and the piano. She hopes to attend Occidental College and wants to become a physician.
  • Casey Huang was our Performing Arts student. He also has a 3.8 GPA and is active in many school organizations, including Student Council Historic Commission, Orchestra Council, National Honor Society, Korean Culture Club, Speech/Debate Team, and AEF Board of Trustees. He has been the Orchestra Council Pres., and V.P. of his Freshman, Sophomore, and Jr. classes. In his spare time he enjoys sports, movies, and time with family. He wants to attend USC and major in Business Administration.
  • Helen Lee was selected for Academics. She currently has a 4.0 GPA and is active in the Apache Pow Wow, Peer Tutoring, and My Friend and I Club. Community activities include the Activity Coordinator for the Arcadia Retirement Village, and tutoring recent Korean immigrants in English. She enjoys playing the piano and plans to attend UCLA majoring in Electrical Engineering.
